The village of Mendocino is subject to wide changes in weather from sun to rain to heavy fog. After walking down the steps to the beach from the south of town that morning the fog became a serene blanket that matched the smooth line of the estuary's curved and constant flow across the bend of the Big River Beach. The fog obscured the headlands to the west and revealed the indistinct figure of a man and even more tentatively, the smudge beside him that was his dog.
