October Lights

Comet Tsuchinshan ATLAS paid a once every 88,000 years visit to the inner solar system in October of 2024. When it was at its closest to earth, it was easily visible to the naked eye.  This photo was taken about 10 days later when the moon was not yet up in the sky, and it was dark enough to also capture the milky way.  Point Cabrillo Light on the Mendocino Coast stands in the foreground.
